Several hundred thousand acres of public ground all around, so keep on rolling to the next ridge top.

What would you do?

Postby UNCLEJED » March 6th, 2009, 7:14 am

On last years opening morning my dad, brother, and myself were in position on a roosted gobbler within 100 yards.  We were on a very steep hillside with the overall wooded area of maybe 10 acres. We parked cars on both ends of the road to make sure people knew somebody was in that spot.  At daybreak a pickup rolled in 50yrds beyond my truck, parked and started walking up towards us.  I walked to the opening to where they could see me and waved an orange hat.  They saw me and continued toward me.  I've never been as angry as I was at that moment.  When I approached them, they replied "yeah we seen you and we're going up there to hunt."  What would you have done???  Whether it matters or not, we were on a piece of my family's property.

By "Apiece of my family's land" are you saying they were poachers? If so and they told me what they told you then I imagine there would have been a fight in the woods or at least some serious yelling and cussing. On top of that I'd get their tag number and swear out a warrant for whatever charges the game warden I talked to suggested.

If it was public land or if they had permission to hunt there and they told me what they told you then I would wait for them to get up the hill and I would walk strait to the gobbler and try to flush him away from them. I'd do this quietly if possible so they wouldn't know what just happened. If I couldn't do it quietly then I'd shoot at the coyote that suddenly appeared out of nowhere.[;)]

Did this man have permission to be there? I know it would still make me angry even if he did. If he had permission I probably would have told the man to leave the property and never come back. If he didn't I would have chatted him all the way to his truck(as nice as I could), then I would get his plate numbers and called the dec.

Since it sounds like privately owned land and I assume they didn't have permission to be there since you acted like you didn't know who they where. I would have escorted them off of your land and let them know that they where not welcomed there. Maybe not in to nice of words.

It does matter - they would have left, preferably with a court summons for criminal trespass.

The property wasn't posted and those ignorant turkey chasers (not worthy of being called hunters) said they had permission.  When asked who they got permission from they named the neighboring property owner.  We set them straight and on their way after we gave them a batch of choice words.
The reason for this post was more hear what you guys think, not so much the property issue, but how ignorant some people are.  I don't know about you guys but if I'm hunting and I see a vehicle or another hunter I go somewhere else.

Those are the same type sorry [censored]s that would see you catching fish and would then pull their boat up within 20' of yours.  I have no use for that type.  If I see a truck or a hunter I move on; I don't want to screw up their day.
