What do you shoot?

Postby trkynut54 » February 5th, 2009, 4:56 pm

When hunting spring gobblers do you shoot only Longbeards or do you shoot Jakes, or both?

I have a good lease that does not get a bunch of pressure, it has quality habitat, and space for birds to grow up.  For us, taking a jake this year is just one fewer longbeard in the future.  We let kids or guest first-timers take a jake, but the other 3 of us who hunt that land stick with hunting the big boys.

In the fall I will shoot a hen but even then I try to keep from shooting jakes. The are the next generation of longbeards after all!

If its one of the earlier spring seasons I'm waiting because its best part of the season and tags are hard to come by so I cherish them. Later seasons with over the counter tags I'll shoot a jake if I'm in the right mood.

I will shoot a jake in the fall but not in the spring if I can help it. The last one I shot was in the spring of '06 and it was because I had been out of commission with back surgery and it was the last of the season. I didn't want to get skunked.

One tag, I aint in no way pullin trigger on a jake. Two year olds, well them cocky lil fellars got a problem on there hand.
With all this being said, when guiding others, they are free to choose to shoot whatever bearded bird they want.

Longbeards only.
I'll eat a tag before shooting a jake, which has been noted, is next year's long beard. Only first timers are allowed to take jakes in these parts (man law). On the lease in Missouri, longbeards only.
