but it looks like calling is no longer a priority for the contemporary turkey hunter.

I believe the turkey hunter is the loser in that regard.  If it keeps going they will all be killed by "deer hunting" them.  I am not surprised.  The TV and DVD people have attracted the deer hunters to the sport and it would naturally follow that they would bring their deer hunting tactics with them.
Why be good when you can B-Mobile or Spin & Strut.

The most inportant thing to me especially early on in my years was scouting/knowing the lay of the land. I knew where the birds were at, knew where they wanted to be, and killed a few even though my calling was terrible. Being patient is important, but if you have a bunch of birds you can move on to the next if they do not work untill you find one that will work for you.

Having a population of turkey to hunt is very important too. No turkey, no success.

And time in the woods.... not necessarily experience.... just time hunting. If someone has twice the time in the woods as another of equal ability, he may well have doubled his chance of sucess.

Of course they're all important as we all know, but it looks like calling is no longer a priority for the contemporary turkey hunter.

I think 60% of the people taking the poll did make it "one" of thier important elements (priorities) . But you can slant the numbers any way you like. Like you mentioned anyone who depends soley on one of the listed elements... isn`t going to be very sucessful.

I believe experience has all those other ingredients in it. With experience you know how much it can pay off to scout out your areas and learn all you can. With experience you know even though you aren't a bad caller you need to practice to keep in good turkey rhythm. And with experience you definitely know without patience you might as well stay in the truck. Thats the way I see it.

I'm not sure who said it, but knowing the "lay of the land" and where those big trees are and set up points is a big big advantange.  I'd say patience and perserverance is next.  Calling is only a small part.  But knowing when to call and getting "inside his head" a little can really help.  After hunting them for a long time, you can pretty much figure what they are going to do sometimes!  {Dave}
