How many are taking a youth turkey hunting?

Postby Everyday Hunter » April 4th, 2009, 5:45 am

How many are taking a youth turkey hunting this year? I'm planning on it -- at least on Pennsylvania's "Youth Day" one week before the regular season opens.

Who has done it? What advice can you give?

Thanks.
Steve

Unfortunately I will not be able to take a youth hunter this year due ot work obligations. I have taken a few successful youth hunters and adults that were new to the sport. I would say the most important part of guiding a hunter is communication. Before the hunt explain to him or her how it might unfold and have them ask you any questions. It never happens exactly how you want it but its important to try and cover the basics. Explain how to move when a turkey is in sight. It might not be a bad idea to watch some turkey hunting video so they can visualize what happens on hunts. And during the hunt its important to be close enough to them so they can hear you, so you can give  instructions. Most of all just make sure they are having a good time. I am sure as long as they even get to hear a turkey they will be hooked. Good luck!! Let us all know how it goes.

I will be taking my buddy's boy across the street.  This is his second hunt with me.  We had a turkey going last year, but he never showed up.  We went over the basics many times from gun safety to videos. It is so much fun to help out a young hunter get into the sport of turkey hunting.

Angus ( 10) was out with me this morning for the KY Yute Opener.  Nada.  The gobblers all took the morning off.  We'll be back out at it on the 'morrow.

Count me in. I thought I would hang back and help the guys with our youth turkey hunting contest we put on the last few years, but the kid I took last year asked me if I would take him out again. Oh well, gotta work at sitting in the woods at the crack of dawn and calling him in a bird again.

Unfortunately we have to wait until May 4 th up here. Seems like half the country has seasons open already and we still have a month to wait.

The Landowner at the lease said he was surprised I hadn't gone to an orphanage to recruit a kid to take hunting this week, as eat up as I am with turkey hunting.  There's a thought for next year.  I have a year to teach 'em what the deal is.
