Sandbars can be very dangerous.

A friend of mine was walking along the edge of a sandbar on a small river and the curl caved off putting him into deep water.
He came up down stream where the river shallowed up and said he thought he was a gonner. He said he couldn't tell which way was up until his hands hit bottom and he stood up in 3 foot of water.

This is a great water safety tip for a variety of water recreation areas. When the tide is low on Tybee Island, people wade out to the exposed sandbars and end up in trouble when the water starts coming back in. There are a lot of signs posted.
