I have a Rem 870 "Special field" I use for deer and rabbits, my son has taken deer and ducks and turkey hunts with it. Paid $250 used and added a screw-in choke barrel for another $65. I had a Mossberg, but thought it was clunky compared to the 870.
try going to each website for specifcations on materials used . both will no doubt get the job done , though the remington will no doubt present less problems , in the long haul , as it is constructed of better materials .
My Mossberg 500 12ga I have now is/was my turkey gun for 14 years. I've had the shotgun for 32 years and it never failed me yet. I have a 28" barrel with a factory Mossberg XX Full Choke on it and with 3" Federals can kill a turkey out to 40+ yards. I got my 835 to give my "baby" a rest for awhile.
The only reason i'm giving it a rest is because the last day of the season last year I had a little accident. I was coming down off the mountain on the rocks and lost my footing, the gun went one way I went the other. It never went off or anything but I knocked the front sight off and bent the rib and also cracked some ribs on me. OUCH
I own and have hunted with both the 500 and 870 I prefer the fit and finish of the Remington. I like the tang safety of the 500 over the cross lock of the 870. I guess my next pump gun should be a Browning BPS.
