Took the 835 out again

I took my new 835 out again today after putting my new sights on it, the Tru Glo Magnum Gobble Dot. It doesn't pattern well at 40 yards but at 30 and under it does quite well. I tried the Federal Premiums 3" 6 shot but the Winchester HV 3" 6 shot turkey loads work better. So i'll save my Federals for Old Faithful, my Mossberg 500. I can kill a turkey out to 40 yards with it easy. I did however shoot a 3 1/2 inch magnum Winchester HV #6 shot at 40 yards with the 835 and it didn't shoot that well either. But I might say it did kick good and hurt my shoulder for just a few seconds, but i'm not afraid of it. [:D]

Sounds like you have a choke problem what choke are you useing?
Clark or Tinker could probaly set you up on the 835.

What choke are you using? That 835 should do 40yds no problem.  Do you have any of the other Mossberg 835 chokes other than the turkey?  I've had great patterns with the Flush Full choke (0.710").  Actually it shot better than the 0.695" turkey choke!

I've seen a 835 print some pretty impressive patterns with winchester 21/4 ounce 4's and fiocchi 2 3/8 ounce 4's and 5's. I don't know choke it was.

I've had good luck with a comp-n-choke .670 in my 835 with Win HV #4 or# 5 in 3 1/2" shells.

I got this choke tube i'm using from allaboutshooting.com it's the Gobbler Xtreme choke tube with a .670 constriction. I see NOW they have ones with the .643 constriction but i'm not spending anymore money for any. Well, maybe....By the way, Clark said this was the best one for the 835, but I beg to differ..

Hey trkynut!  Nice gun, sounds like you have done your homework so far. The best thing you can do is get the bore measured abiout an inch back from the choke threads. That may give you a better idea where to go with a constriction. Clark no doubt knows his guns and chokes, so his recommendation is a pretty accurate one as far as across-the -board. you may have gotten a barrel bilt first thing on a monday, last thing on a friday or right at shift change.  I have seen "squared bores" on guns and I am not talikng about cheap guns either! Check your bore in 3 spots, like I said , about an inch down the pipe from the threads. Thats a good start.

Guns are as individual as people and so are chokes.  In general, Clark can steer you in the correct direction and tell you which choke has given him the best results in a given gun based on several thousand rounds shot.  But, the actual performance will only be determined when you use that choke in your gun.  95% of the time Clark is spot on.  The other 5% of the time are the results of variables over which he has no control.  Clark is an honorable, exceptionally knowledgeable individual, and he would never give an answer to purposefully mislead someone, or give an answer he wasn't as sure as anybody can be about, without test-firing your shot gun with that choke in it with your choice of ammunition.
