835 jamming on 3 1/2" shells

Has anyone else had this problem?

Both my father and I have Mossberg 835 Utra-mags. that we purchased in January. I was pattering mine and the Federal Premium 2 1/4 oz, 3 1/2" magnum shot shells would jam in the receiver. The open shell was too big to expel. I used Remington 3" Nitro turkey loads and was impressed with the pattern so I never tried any other shells yet.

I asked my father if he had any problems. he thought he shot 3 1/2s without trouble but on the opening of the PA turkey season he shot a gobbler and the shell stuck. Luckily one shot was all he needed.

My friend has an older 835 and never had a problem. I will call Mossberg on this but was wondering if any one else had a problem. Appreciate any input.

I have an 835 and shoot 3.5" Hevi-13's without any problem.  I have shot Winchester Ext. Range also without any problems.  I have had issues with Federal ammunition in the past though with other guns.  I'd try a different load if I were you.  Those 3.5" 2.25 oz. Hevi-13's in #5 shoot really well out of my 835 with a Primos Jellyhead tube.  Good pattern at 50 yds..  My farthest shot was only 35 though last week however I loaned it to my buddy and he shot a bird at 50 this morning with it.

I'll try the Hevi's out. I didn't want to send the gun back during the season. The 3" worked good and I filled my first tag with one, but I bought that gun to shoot 3 1/2s.

I had the exact same problem. I was using the Federal Flite Control 3.5 shells.  Last February I was patterning my gun and the shells would not extract.  I cleaned it and tried different 3.5 shells and they would also jam.  I had to send my gun back to Mossberg and they paid shipping to and from and repaired the gun at no charge.  I had the gun over 1 year when it starting jamming.  I didn't get it back until after turkey season but I had a Winchester 1300 turkey special that worked out fine.

I believe I will have to send it back. I tried some winchester shells on sunday and they jammed also. I tagged out yesterday so I can go ahead and send it back.
