I would like to thank you all so much for your expressions of concern, prayers, e-mail and offers of help during this most trying time for us.

On 05.08.09, what was described as an inland hurricane came through Southern Illinois and devastated the area. Unfortunately, one person was killed and hundreds of folks were injured either during the storm or while attempting clean-up efforts. All electricity and Internet service was interrupted for several days.

We had damage to our home/office/shop, vehicle and lost scores of large trees on our property. Our shooting/test range is tree littered. Trees that had stood tall for 60-80 years are gone and must be removed.

The good news is that we now have all services (except television) and are in the clean-up mode. We had no injuries and while the damage was very real, we'll recover from that over time.

I can not tell you how heart-warming it was and is to have so many expressions of concern from you all. It means a lot and is greatly appreciated by both of us.

Thanks again,
Clark

First off, I'm glad you guys are all right.

Second, your story hit close to home.  We live near Cincinnati; hurricanes just don't happen to guys like us.  Then Ike hit last September.  Our results were similar, both at home and at deer camp.

Third, your story really shook me.  I realize I was busy getting ready for a trip down river to Carrollton, KY, and had no idea what was going on just a little further downriver.  I spent the day just cursing the rain and wondering if it would be letting up in time. . .  and being glad I was tagged out and didn't have to hunt in it.  Your story is particularly sobering.

Good luck.

By the way, there is one good piece of news out of all this.  With all the trees coming down, there is a lot of new understory growth this year.  It's been fantastic for the turkeys and the deer both.   You may have some trouble with your acorn crop this year, but next year may be fantastic.  Every big tree that got knocked down was blocking the light of several smaller ones.  At least that is what I've found on my place. On my place, the winds have partially knocked over scores of cedar trees-- what laziness kept me from hinge cutting, the hand of the Lord hath taken care of.
