A friend is looking to have some #7 Heavyweight shot loaded for his son's .410 to use in the turkey woods.

The smallest gauge we can use here in Illinois is a 20 gauge, so I've not spent any time at all with .410s and turkey loads. I have however spent quite a bit of time with the new personal defense .410 shells and they are impressive.

I had my brother load some .410 up with 3 .390 round balls. I tried them out to 30 yards and they were very nice. I kept the gun and shells handy for personal defense for a long time. You could cover the 3 holes with your hand at 30 yards it would be a devasting close range load.

I'm going to keep the shots at 25 yrds. and under which is no different than my bowhunting. I think of this as being one step easier than a bowhunt. The other thing is again this is a tember hunt and has always been close shooting. All game laws will be and are being followed.

I look forward to hearing how it goes this fall. The fall has become my favorite time to hunt turkeys. I enjoy seeing the big flocks and the social aspect of the hunt.

fallhunt: I couldn't get a good view of the photo (cut off-am I the only one?); just wondering, what was the pellet count in the neck section, and using which choke? Are you planning on using a full choke in the fall?

For a shell comparison and for killing power, I highly recommend the Remington Express Long Range high brass shell (no connection to Remington-just a very satisfied consumer). While I haven't used the .410, I can vouch for the stopping power of the 20 and 12 gauge, even in the brush you would expect in hunting the timber. Another advantage is they are commonly available, usually at Walmart at a good price. Give us a report if you get to try these. Good Luck.

Jellyhead,I didn't use a regular turkey pattern I just used cardboard.It looks like 15 in head and neck 6 shot. I did use Remington but they were 7.5 and was not really happy with them but now that the sight is set I will re-visit all shells,6 and 7.5 Rem. and Win. The choke is full and is not changeable. As far as the pic goes I don't know why it did that. I had to scroll down the pic using the roller on my mouse.
