remington 870 or 11-87 sps surshot turkey

hey everyone ive been looking at the new remington turkey guns and i cant get em off my mind, and would like to buy one before the next season. the 11-87 and 870 sps shurshot turkey in 12ga. 3 1/2in. look like they throw a hell of a pattern. also the sp-10 in 10ga. coould be used for deer hunting as well as turkey busting. if you have any input on your setup would be greatly apreciated.

I use the 11-87 Super Mag with a 26 inch barrel and a primos jelly head choke. It's a great gun combination...a little heavy but it's a great all around gun.

thanks for the input they look like great guns, and i would love to own one next year forsure. ive killed birds with a variety of guns berretta being my favorite, but i want a turkey killing machine. low recoil, super tight patterns, and perferably 3 1/2inch shell.thats why the remington line seem to fit the bill.

Allways shot remington. can't see putting that kind of money in a Turkey gun for a few shots a year. shot a 11-87 26" barrel. with a ssx choke. and a 870 with a 26" barrel , both will shoot 3 1/2 " shells . both can be used for most any kind of hunting. have heard about short barrells not paterning as good as a 26" barrel but i don't know . have never shot a short barrel . but i like my remongton's.

Id get the 870. Tons of aftermarket stuff, like knoxx recoil reducing stock, extended magazines, lights etc. and a jillion different types of barrels if you wanted to configure the gun for different applications.

The 11-87 doesnt have as many choices and in my experience...reliability doesnt compare. I had 2 11-87's...both had some reliability issues, but my 870's never have. And its less expensive so you can buy any goodies you like.

I bought a pump for turkey hunting and hated it. If possible try a pump and make sure you like shooting a pump before you buy one. I would buy a semi auto anytime over a pump if I had to settle for a uses auto. Pumps are less expensive and will certainly kill turkey, (as will either the 870 or 1187), but I sure wouldn't trade my semi auto for two pumps if I had to use em..

im with ya grousec. i grew up burning teal out of flag ponds every weekend so ive always shot a semi berretta, but this year i got a dud shell muffed a longbeard an thought how could this have been different. i figured a pump would be easier to cycle a fresh shell in after such an incident.

I hunt with an 11-87 SP it came with a 28" barrel. I bought a 18" smooth bore deer barrel with rifle sights for Turkeys. I'm using a Briley .665
2" extended choke. The extra weight reduction and swing room is sweet.

I shoot an 870 super mag w sureshot stock, 28" barrel, and a jelly head choke. Up till this year I was shooting 3.5" shells. I patterned it with all hevi-shot the 3.5" hevi13's which have 5,6and7s, 3"#6s and 3"#7s. The gun patterned better with the 3" shells. With the 3.5" it put 175 pellets in a 10" circle at 30 yds. With the 3" #7s it put 207 pellets in a 10" circle at 30 yds. With the 3"#6s it put 217 pellets in a 10" circle at 30 yds.Needless to say I switched to the heavi-shot 3"#6s. My buddys pattern with his 22" barrel 11-87 was not nearly as tight as my 870 with 28" barrel in a side by side comparison. You mentioned you wanted a gun with low recoil... Well, a 3.5" in a 870 with a turkey choke kicks like Bruce lee with four legs! Especially with the heavi shot 3.5 having 2.25 OZs of powder. The semi auto action of the 11-87 will help absorb some of the recoil. For me The 3" shells are more forgiving as far as recoil and even better than that they gave me a tighter pattern. So no matter which gun you choose you will need to find the right combination of choke and shells for your set up, to achieve the best/tighest pattern. Good luck!
