Winchester 1300

My dad bought a Winchester 1300 off a boy the other day and let me tell you it is a very sweet gun! Anyways, for all of you who have experience with them, what is the best choke/ammo combo to use in them? I usually enjoy "Testing" different loads and chokes but with it being so close to our season opener I was wanting some quicker results. Thanks in advance!

I gave my son my 1300 when I bought an 870, several years ago. While my son has been away serving in the Marine Corps, I use his 1300, just because...

Anyway, I put a Comp N Choke on the original 28 inch barrel. I use Remington Magnum Turkey loads, 2 oz of # 4 Copperplated shot.

At 40 yards, it has a nice, tight, even pattern. I have killed birds at 46 yards, and I highly recommend this combination.

Also, I know that I may be opening a large can of worms...

My sons and I only use # 4 shot. # 4 has more energy at 40 yards than # 6 shot. I couldn't care less with how many pellets are in a 10 inch paper plate at 40 yards. We don't hunt paper plates. We hunt big, tough turkeys, and # 4 shot kills them real dead, real fast.

I'd have to recommend the SSX http://allaboutshooting.com/product_inf ... ucts_id=76 and 3" Hevi-13 "Bronze" shells with 2 oz. of #6 shot for the very best combination in that 1300. If you want to shoot lead shells, then I'd recommend the same choke but 3" Winchester HV (Black Shells) with 1.75 oz. of #6 shot.

One of the best things that you can do is to "deep clean" the bore. I recommend the guidelines in this article http://allaboutshooting.com/article_inf ... les_id=282

With a deep cleaned bore, the SSX turkey choke and either of those shells, you'll be ready to go.

I got a comp-n-choke .655 in my 1300, I'm shooting Winchester xtended range #6's. It get nice even patterns at 20 to 40 yards. Shot a nice Tom last year at 30 yards and killed him dead. The tight choke with the short barrell and 6 shot are a very good combination.

I want to SECOND the recommendation on the Hevi-13 shells. It is almost beyond belief how
effective these shells are at extended ranges. One word describes them LETHAL....

I'll echo the SSX and Hevi #6s. What an awesome combination! The pattern holds up well beyond what copper plated lead can do.
