11-87 + SSX + H-13 #7

Well I just got back inside from letting a round go. Wanted to see how the H-13 3" #7's did. Lets just say I found my go to load. From a laser'd 40 yards it put 216 in the 10" circle. I also had a turkey target on it and it put around 20 in the brain and spine. Before this I was shooting Win X-tended 3" #6 and shot this load when the temps were in the 30's and got 95 in 10" and 40 with the SSX. Today's temp was around 45.

Isn't 40 yards too far for #7 (even in high density) to have enough energy to break through the spine and/or skull?

To answer your question bantamax, no 40 yards is not to far for this #7 load. I'll try to explain. From what I have read, you go up 2 sizes from hevi-shot to get it's lead equivalent as for as energy. I could do all the calculations to get an exact answer but no need. So that's like saying one of my #7 pellets has the same energy as a #5 lead pellet. Dead turkey. Now worst case scenario let say it has the same energy as a #6 lead pellet, still dead turkey. Also the smaller the shot, the easier it is to penetrate. This is just what I have concluded and believe from research.

Anyway, I shoot the 11-87 with the Hevi 13's blend of 5's, 6's and 7's and love it--got a sweet choke from Clark as well and my numbers are very close to yours--a lot of dead turkeys[:D]
