The turkeys stayed by the ranch because of water, which, in dry regions, is almost as attractive as a feeder. That’s where my friend plopped his seat cushion the next morning.
When several gobblers started ripping it on the roost in the mountains above, he momentarily regretted his decision. When the birds went silent after flydown, he kicked himself a bit. But when four strutters followed multiple hens through the ranch yard toward the stock tank, he got over it. His big Gould’s gobbler, complete with a stunning white-tipped tail, hit the dirt at 20 paces.
And wouldn’t you know it? His bird was bigger than mine. Of course, that wasn’t difficult.
