Conclusion: Manifest Destiny

In "Decision Time," Editor Brian Lovett shares a scenario from his 20-plus years hunting turkeys. Each hinges on a critical decision. Post what choice you would have made, and then see how things actually turned out.

Conclusion: Manifest Destiny

Enough was enough. I'd come more than a quarter-mile for the turkey, and I wasn't stopping without him. I ditched my vest by the woods edge, got in low-crawling mode and aimed for a small finger ridge about 75 steps away. From there, I'd have a good view of where the gobbler had been.

When reached the crest of the smaller ridge, I eased next to the only tree in sight and glassed the area. Nothing. I waited. Still nothing.

"Doggone it, I'll bet he -- wait," I thought.

Sure enough, the tip of a fan glistened just over the top of the main ridge. The bird was probably 60 yards away and hadn't seen me.

Two yelping series, four gobbles and a 20-second turkey trot later, the gobbler was flopping 30 steps from me. Whew. Who said Midwesterners can't make a go of it out West?

What decision did you make?
