Conclusion: The Gap Gobbler

The bird seemed determined to stay put, so we took the game to him.

Hook remained behind and continued calling, and Miller and I crawled toward the knoll. If we got there without being seen, we'd be in great shape.

Unfortunately, turkeys being turkeys, things got interesting. As we crawled toward the rise, the gobbler finally broke and headed toward Hook. In fact, we almost crossed paths in the field, and only the tall CRP grass kept us hidden.

Within seconds, the bird was past us and marching toward our previous position. I swung around, aimed my shotgun at a small gap in the grass and prayed. When that light-bulb head emerged, I fired and saved the hunt from disaster.

"Well, maybe we should have stayed put," I said to Miller.

"Maybe, but you never know," he replied. "It's tough to argue with a dead turkey."

What decision did you make? Did you make the right call?

What you did worked. Congratulations.
Backing away sounds like it might have worked since the turkey started heading back to your original position.
When I back away I try to keep the original position in shooting range.

If you agree with me call it fact; if you disagree - call it my opinion.
After all - we are talking turkey.
