We could only read the situation and react. When the gobbler finally gave up and ran from the mob of jakes, we noted the direction he traveled and sprinted to do a long end-around. Luckily, there was just enough cover and terrain to let us navigate a mesquite flat and slip into the narrow live oak-filled draw where the bird had gone. If he stuck to that natural corridor, we’d be waiting.

A few minutes after we sat down, a white head appeared, followed by several crimson-necked turkeys. The jakes were still dogging that poor gobbler. Man, they sure looked funny flying out of there like quail when my buddy put the hammer down on the longbeard.
