Stoltz soon began calling, so I knew his answer. And the more I thought about the situation, the more I?relaxed. Sure, the deer had made the hens nervous, but I suspected the birds wouldn't go too far -- especially with fresh beans in the ground. Sticking it out was probably the best bet.

After about 20 minutes, I saw something slinking through the tree line about 65 yards to our left.

"Turkey coming," Stoltz whispered. "It's a gobbler."

Actually, it was two, and five minutes later, one was flopping.

"Man, I was kind of nervous there for a while," I said as we approached the bird.

"Yeah, me too," Stoltz replied. "But I was going to tell you that we needed to stay here, even though those hens got kind of spooked by the deer. I think those birds are just keying on this beanfield hot and heavy right now, so I didn't want to leave them."

Heck, the plan worked out almost well enough to make me an optimist again -- almost.
