Think I'll stick with Jordan.  That is the most important quote in the book.

Can you enlighten me? ....or would I rather not know?

Charles Jordan...

When I used the link Silvestris provided in another thread, I reached an Adobe file of scanned book pages that were prefaced-

"The Wild Turkey and it's Hunting"
Edward McIlhenny  1914.

If the quote is Jordan, who is McIlhenny, the publisher?

E.A. McIlhenny wrote the book from the field notes of Jordan.  McIlhenny was not as clear about that as he should have been.  McIlhenny was an heir to the Tobasco sauce family at Avery Island, Louisiana.

Jordan was the manager of a ten thousand acre preserve near Hammond, Louisiana at the time of his death by the hands of a poacher.  Jordan is considered to be one of the most knowledgable persons ever considering the language and behavior of the wild turkey.

I consider the book to be my tukey bible and I never fail to pick up something new with each reading.

You can read the book for free here:

http://books.google.com/books?id=CASbSe ... ild+Turkey

The entire book is interesting considering the date of publication.  You should temper your thoughts about rifles, etc. by also considering the time period.  The preface is important for historical context, but Chapters 11-12 are the most important insofar as hunting turkeys is concerned.

Also, should you be fortunate enough to have an adult wild turkey hen wingbone, his instructions on making a Jordan yelper are excellent.  I cut some cane on one of my few hunts this year and since I couldn't hunt but little this season, I used some spare time to create a Jordan yelper.  It really sounds sweet.  If I were only allowed to carry one caller, I would not feel at a disadvantage with the wingbone.
