Turning Turkey Calls

[font=calibri]I'm relatively new to the forum, but can't begin to tell you how addicted I am to calling turkeys. I have an interest in call making; it's been mostly box calls up until now. I have an interest in turning some pots for slate/aluminum/ crystal calls (the slate/aluminum/crystal have been purchased).  I've been seeing some really nice looking calls and wanted to ask a couple of questions.  I have some experience with a wood lathe; turning strikers, pens, bowls, and small vases...  In the past, I've taken a large piece of material and turned down an end down to be secured in a Nova chuck and proceeded to shape from there. To minimize wood waste, is the intended pot material being glued to waste wood and then turned? Can any helpful hints be offered?

The way that you mount your blank is all up to you. I drill a hole halfway into the wood with mine and use expanding jaws inside the hole.

I really enjoyed looking at that link, Stoner. I've always wanted to get into making turkey calls because I've had some experience with a wood lathe when I was in high school but I don't have access to a lathe anymore. I have looked around for one here and there but I'm not sure what to look for really. I know JET makes nice lathes...maybe I'll get one someday!

Hey Fargohunt - I live in Clarence Center... Hunt mostly in Souther tier, love the hills of Ellicottville, Holland, and the Hanging Bog area.

Hey Stoner - I finally was able to get a hour or so to work in the wood shop and did some turning. I've looked on line for specifics on the sounding board for a slate call. It is to my understanding that the material may be formica, slate, wood, or glass. Is there a specifc diameter or thickness?
