Turkey Tip #8: Fab Fields?

Fields can be tough to hunt, but they can also be great. Why? Turkeys like to hang out in fields because that's where many of their food sources are in spring. Also, when you hunt a field, you can essentially block out your back side, so 90 percent of your concentration can be on the field in front of you.

I typically only hunt fields, but never without quality decoys. In most cases fields are safe because Dekes can be seen from a distance and if they are shot at, it should come from behind you. Of course you have to know the conditions on when to be in a field. The good thing about fields is that it brings out the competition, and those Toms have a chance to get real angry when they see the decoys. Throughout the years I have killed a few 2 year olds, but most of my fiels Turkeys have been 3 or older and never ran to the call. They took their time to commit and walked in real slow (but confident) while approaching the stuffed jake.
