Hardwoods or Fields?

Postby MassGobblers » April 19th, 2010, 8:06 am

The question is self explanatory so I'll let you all respond with your preference......but please let me know why you choose one over the other.. Thanks!

Fields
The wood lots I hunt are so thick that you can't see much more then 30 yards and can only shoot about half that.

Although I like to hunt the fields more I have more success in the hardwoods.
Love to hear the turkeys talk!

For me, hardwoods. There are some fields in the areas I hunt, but I seldom seem them in the fields during the season.

Well, I'm going to tell you that I like them together...be that this is the type of habitat I can hunt mostly. No doubt I love to watch them in the fields and the hardwoods are special for many reasons, but I just can't can't separate them as a preference. Having said all that, I have watched countless birds over the past 10 days in the fields both am and 30 minutes before dusk--they are really out and strutting their stuff. May 1st still seems painfully far off[:@]

Fields. Especially in a strong wind, during a rain storm, or in the spring season when toms want hens to see them in strut.

I have to agree with Fargohunt. It is a sight to watch a longbeard strut in a field trying to prove no other gobbler is better looking than him. It is also heart throbbing to listen to a big paintbrush 50 or 60 yards away in a hardwood bottom gobbling almost every step coming to your call. I would have to say I would hunt them in fields, hardwoods or the parking lot at McDonalds.
